Thanks to a new racing series for young female drivers, women could return to the Formula 1 circus.
Even in motor racing, the demands for equality could not be ignored. Prominent pilots such as Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton had campaigned to give women better entry opportunities and more driving time.
With the launch of the so-called F1 Academy from 2023, the motorsport premier class has reacted to this. As announced at the end of the season in Abu Dhabi, the new format aims to “develop and prepare young drivers to advance to higher levels of competition, including the W Series, Formula 3, Formula 2 and Formula 1.”
How long will Lombardi be the last?
In its inaugural season, the F1 Academy will consist of five teams, each fielding three cars. 21 races over seven weekends are planned. The 15 drivers drive standard cars with 165 hp engines.
By the way: In the history of Formula 1, only two women took part in Grand Prix races, Maria Teresa de Filippis (5 races) and Lella Lombardi (12 races). Only Lombardi drove into the points, in 1975 in Spain she was sixth.
