Face recognition does not work in such a case because the face is half covered. Apple responded to this issue by quickly suggesting the numeric code once face recognition failed. Unlock iPhone with Face ID despite mask
Pulling the mask off every time is not an option here. Face ID also doesn’t work if only the eyes are seen. Apple has recognized this and has now created the function to unlock the iPhone via Apple Watch. Here’s how it works, step by step:
- First you need an iPhone with Face ID with the operating system iOS 14.5 or higher and an Apple Watch with the operating system watchOS 7.4 or higher.
- The two Apple devices must already be paired.
- Go to the iPhone settings and select the area “Face ID & Passcode“.
- Enter your code and activate the option “Unlock with Apple Watch” and “wrist detection“.
Now, thanks to the Apple Watch, you can unlock your iPhone with Face ID even though you’re wearing a mask. Make sure the WiFi and Bluetooth options are enabled for it to work smoothly. But you don’t have to be in the WLAN, it only serves to connect both devices. There is still no perfect and easy way (even without an Apple Watch) to unlock the iPhone despite the mask. Maybe Apple can come up with something else.
