What is 2-factor authentication?
Normally, your Facebook account is only encrypted with a password you have chosen, which is particularly advantageous for strangers who want access to your personal data. Facebook’s 2-factor authentication protects your account alongside the original password with an additional code, which is regenerated every 30 seconds and is displayed on your mobile phone in the Facebook app. So even if hackers get your password, the Risk of unauthorized access through the generated code is very low.
Facebook: Activate 2-factor authentication
In order to be able to use the additional protection of a 2-factor authentication for your Facebook profile, you must first activate it. We will explain how to do this in just a few steps:
- Open Facebook, go to the menu and then click on “ideas“.
- Go to the field “Security and Login”.
- Click on “To edit‘ and then to ‘Use two-factor authentication”.
- Under “Here we go” you can confirm your choice.
- In the last step you have the option to choose your security method either via SMS or via an app.
Use 2-factor authentication: this is how it works
After activating the two-factor authentication, it is immediately ready for use. If you now want to log in to Facebook or via a new device, you must follow these steps:
- Sign in to your Facebook account.
- After entering the data, the authentication code must now be entered. You will receive this via a notification in your Facebook account.
- Enter the code and click “Continue”.
- You are now logged into Facebook.
