End clap for Messenger Lite on Android! The lite version of the Messenger application will permanently shut down on September 18, 2023. Before the service is permanently shut down, Facebook is forcing users to migrate to the standard version.
After seven years of good and loyal service, Messenger Lite will permanently close its doors on September 18, 2023. Launched in 2016 by Facebook, the lite version of Messenger was designed for entry-level smartphones that don’t have much RAM and storage space.
Less energy-intensive than its big sister, Messenger Lite was designed to send and receive instant messages or photos in particular. Weighing only 10MB originally, the app is now almost 58MB after many updates. For comparison, the standard Messenger version weighs 153 MB; a difference of nearly 100 MB between the two apps.
Among the other arguments of Messenger Lite, you could basically save mobile data and use it everywhere even in an area where the internet connection was slow or unstable.
Closure of Messenger Lite: users are advised to download the standard (heavier) version of Messenger
Despite the success of Messenger Lite with its users, Facebook has therefore decided to shut down the application after mid-September 2023. This announcement comes as Messenger is preparing to end SMS support in a month and encrypt conversations end-to-end before the end of 2023.
Now the Android users will see the following message on their smartphone screen: ” Your chats are transferred to Messenger. Messenger app has more features you’ll love, like GIFs and dark mode “. Tapping on the notification (can’t be deleted) will redirect it to the Messenger Lite app and users will be prompted to download the standard version of Messenger.
With the abandonment of Messenger Lite, Meta will fully focus on the standard version of Messenger. This decision could therefore disappoint many users who will probably uninstall the application in question or turn to Facebook Lite. But will Facebook’s lite app be the next victim of Mark Zuckerberg’s group?
