Instagram has expanded its user age verification test using facial recognition.
A few months ago, Instagram announced the launch in Europe and elsewhere of a video selfie feature to verify the age of its users using facial recognition. The platform confirmed a few days ago that it has extended its technology to other countries around the world.
Discourage young users from lying about their age
Instagram is now relying on Yoti, a trusted third party, to deploy in more European countries, but also in Japan, Australia, South Korea, Mexico and Canada, its facial recognition solution which allows provide an estimate of the user’s age based on their facial features.
While promising to make its age verification tools ” available in even more countries around the world in the coming months Instagram confirms its intention to generalize its technology. The aim is to dissuade a person from changing their date of birth in order to circumvent the protective measures that apply to those under 18.
Facial recognition technology that estimates your age, but cannot recognize your identity
New Instagram users have three ways to confirm their age. First, they can provide a screenshot of their ID card. But now they can also take a video selfie. This is then sent to Yoti. Using its solution, the company manages to estimate the age of the user and then shares this estimate with him. She and Meta claim to delete the image that has been used, while stating that the technology cannot recognize an identity, only age.
Finally, there is one last way to verify the age of a user: that of the social guarantee. Here you need to get confirmation of your age from followers you might have in common. Not the easiest solution.
The indication of age to register on Instagram has, it should be remembered, been mandatory since 2019. Eventually, facial recognition should be imposed on a majority of social platforms. The process requires much less time (and data) than a screenshot of his identity card in particular.
