A tram on line 7 derailed at Berner Zytglogge this morning.
The tram driver and a passenger were slightly injured and a ticket machine was damaged.
How the derailment occurred is still unclear. Cancellations and delays are to be expected.
Traces on the ground testify to the great force with which the tram must have flown off the tracks. According to an SRF reporter on site, the Combino vehicle slid dozens of meters across Kornhausplatz, razing traffic signs, a ticket machine and waste bins. It only came to a standstill in front of a restaurant. “We have never seen anything like this in Bern,” said a passer-by.
The accident poses a mystery: At this point the 7 tram should actually have turned into Marktgasse, although it would actually have been traveling at walking pace.
The police are currently investigating the accident. The exact circumstances are still unclear.
