Fallen into a shaft – firefighters rescued four-year-old from well

The fire department rescued a four-year-old child from a well in Maissau (Hollabrunn district) on Saturday. It had fallen into the shaft, which was around six to seven meters deep. A member of the fire department rappelled down to the boy and pulled him up in a sling.

The helpers were alerted late on Saturday afternoon. The message was “Child in fountain – four years old,” said the Hollabrunn (Lower Austria) district fire brigade command in a broadcast. Upon arrival, contact was made immediately with the injured child. “The emergency services tried to calm the brave boy down,” it was said. This is what the shaft from which the boy had to be freed looks like. Since rescue via a ladder was not possible, a crane arm was used and a fire brigade member roped himself in the little Lower Austrian. “A short first aid was given while still in the well,” said operations manager Klemens Kaltenbrunner. More than 50 firefighters on dutyMore than 50 members of the fire department with ten vehicles, the police and rescue were on duty. The cooperation was “really excellent,” said section fire brigade commander Josef Baumeister. The four-year-old was flown to a hospital for further examinations.
