False advertising: why Tesla is condemned in South Korea

Tesla has just been sanctioned for false advertising in South Korea.

The South Korean authority which monitors compliance with consumer law has imposed a fine of several million euros on the car manufacturer.

Fine of more than 2 million euros

Does Tesla have a problem with the truth? The question arises with the accumulation of cases in which the manufacturer of electric vehicles is accused of lying about the goods. An action is thus underway across the Atlantic for possibly having lied about the Autopilot which was to lead to autonomous cars. The firm denies this, speaking for its part of a simple ” ambitious goal ” not having been carried out.

Today, it is in South Korea that the manufacturer is questioned. The authority in charge of compliance with consumer law in the country, the Fair Trade Commission, has just imposed a fine of 2.8 billion won (about 2.1 million euros) on the world leader in the sector. .

Tesla is thus accused of misleading advertising on its Korean website which, since the launch of an investigation last February, has been modified by the brand.

Several inaccurate statements noted

The Fair Trade Commission thus explained that Tesla had lied about: the speed of charging the batteries of its vehicles; the distance they could travel; and the savings made by switching from gasoline to electric.

But that’s not all. The company, which saw a 40% growth in sales in 2022, was also fined an additional 1 billion won (about 744,000 euros) for not providing enough information on its cancellation policy . This is a violation of local e-commerce law.

The regulator announced in parallel with these sanctions the upcoming sending of instructions to Tesla which will allow it to restore order in its advertising communications.
