This Wednesday, April 7, within the framework of the bill on “separatism”, the Senate voted to suspend family allowances to fight against school absenteeism and the ban on conspicuous religious symbols during competitions organized by sports federations .

New amendments that risk widening inequalities. Within the framework of the bill on “separatism”, two votes by the right majority of amendments were promulgated:

  • the suspension of family allowances to fight against school absenteeism
  • the ban on conspicuous religious symbols in sports lessons.

“The first respect for the principles of the Republic is to go to the school of the Republic”

The amendment on the suspension of family allowances was carried by Jacqueline Deromedi, senator representing the French living outside France and “Co-signed by Bruno Retailleau and 37 colleagues”, she wrote on her Twitter account. It was voted by 210 votes for and 125 votes against. Thus, family and back-to-school allowances may be suspended, according to a procedure “proportionate and graduated ” and in “Favoring dialogue”.

According to Jacques Grosperrin, Senator LR, the objective is to give “A strong signal” because “The first respect for the principles of the Republic is to go to the school of the Republic”. An opinion shared by the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer, “For my part I tend to think that it is our responsibility to apply the existing law”, he emphasizes. “There is one point that I share, it is respect for compulsory education”, he added.

The prohibition of “wearing conspicuous religious symbols”

Despite opinions “unfavorable” Minister responsible for Sports Roxana Maracineanu, the Senate also voted to ban the “Wearing conspicuous religious symbols” in official sports competitions.

An amendment that explicitly targets the wearing of the veil. “If the wearing of the veil is not explicitly prohibited, we could see the emergence of community sports clubs promoting certain religious symbols”, underlined Senator LR Michel Savin at the origin of the amendment. The senator also asks the federations to denounce “Any fact contrary to the principles of sport, and any attack on secularism or on the physical and moral integrity of persons observed or brought to its attention”, in a new amendment voted on.
