The news is not good for the man who left his mark on Brazilian football. According to the latest news provided by Pelé’s relatives, the Brazilian icon’s health has deteriorated considerably. His family was also gathered in full force on Sunday, Christmas Day, to stay at his bedside.

The three children of the “king” sat at his side, as they showed in a photo published on social networks. The former footballer, then 82, has been in hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, for a month. He suffers from colon cancer (discovered in September 2021) as well as kidney and heart dysfunction.

Farewell to his daughters

If the illnesses of Edson Arantes do Nascimento (his full name) have progressed and worsen his state of health, a new medical report should be revealed during the week, as announced by one of his daughters.

It is also towards the latter that the eyes are turned and in particular towards his daughter Kely Cristina Nascimento. Indeed, the latter is in charge of communication on the subject. Last Thursday, she posted a photo of her and her dad in her hospital bed with the caption, “One more night together.”

And according to several media, the legend Pelé would have said goodbye to his daughters as evidenced by this tweet: “Pelé says goodbye to his family and friends from his hospital bed. Football legend, Pelé is slowly losing the battle against cancer, his family says “his condition is getting even worse.”

Tributes from players

The players, too, are preparing for the worst, like Paris Saint-Germain striker Neymar. Invited to award a “Player of History” trophy as part of a ceremony after the Football World Cup, the Brazilian star took the opportunity to pay a fine tribute to “King” Pelé.

“As you know, Pelé is part of my story, he recalled. King, our affection and our respect for you will be eternal. The tribute is beautiful and very important not only because Pelé is the only player to have won three World Cups, but also because there have been several ‘players of the match’ in different eras of football, but ‘player in history’, only one.”

The next few days, and even the next few hours will therefore be decisive for the man who has marked the history of football in Brazil.
