Farm continues to be evacuated – mountain is crumbling: stones are threatening to fall down

There is still acute danger to life after a rockfall in East Tyrol’s Innervillgraten. The farm remains evacuated. The community hopes for security measures soon.

Farmer Albrecht Ortner is still living in a state of emergency. The farmer and his mother (86) still cannot return to their house in Innervillgraten because the mountain has been constantly crumbling since January and rock is colliding directly behind the property. (We reported.) “The mountain is moving a lot. Unfortunately, there is still no all-clear,” says Innervillgraten’s mayor Andreas Schett. “There is a risk of another 30,000 cubic meters of material falling down,” adds Schett. No suitable safety measure yet. The experts have not yet been able to agree on a safety measure. “It is difficult to say which measure is the best.” But the community leader is pushing for a solution. “There will be a round table in mid-March. Whether part of the building has to be demolished and the farmstead is secured with fill and wall constructions, or the mountain at the top is removed, will hopefully be decided soon!” Blasting is currently ruled out: “That would only make the mountain move even more and pose other dangers.”
