No, connected clothing has not yet gone out of fashion. Or maybe they are coming back into fashion. After a few inconclusive tests in 2016, the wearables movement could resume.
Adobe just presented the first connected clothing that can be electronically reconfigured using Adobe Primrose technology this week, during the F/W 2024 show at New York Fashion Week, with fashion designer Christian Cowan.
This collaboration illustrates the future possibilities for designers to use innovative technologies to push the boundaries of fashion design.
Liquid crystals in polymers
The Adobe x Christian Cowan dress is made from liquid crystals dispersed in polymers and laser cut into “petal” shapes. It is these crystals that allow you to give different patterns to the dress.
Underneath each petal is a flexible circuit board that allows the color of the petal to alternate between gray and ivory. The dress opens up possibilities for fashion design and demonstrates how a static garment can be transformed into a dynamic expression of art and technology.
Unveiled at Adobe MAX 2023, the Adobe Primrose Dress is touted as an innovative technology that transforms fabric into a living work of art. The collaboration with Cowan made it possible to go from concept to wearable product in less than two months.

“I knew as soon as I saw the possibilities of Primrose technology that I wanted to collaborate with Adobe at New York Fashion Week F/W 2024 to further explore the intersection of fashion and technology,” said Christian Cowan. “I was particularly attracted to the ability to make the same garment repeatedly.”
“Our collaboration with Christian Cowan allows us to envision clothing that evolves and interacts with its environment,” said Gavin Miller, head of research at Adobe. “With Primrose, even static clothing can be transformed into dynamic expressions of art and technology.”
Adobe tools played an important role in every step of the design process for this unique dress. Adobe Illustrator was used for basic tasks, such as mapping the flexible circuit boards, sketching the designs and positioning the petals, while Adobe After Effects was used to bring the dress to life using animated graphics.
