Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw 2, when is the Dwayne Johnson / Jason Statham reunion?

While Fast & Furious X has been in theaters since Wednesday, May 17, the Hobbs and Shaw spin-off centered on the characters of Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson, and Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham, is broadcast tonight on TF1 .

Directed by David Leitch, to whom we owe John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2 and the recent Bullet Train, the film was released in our theaters in August 2019.

Since Hobbs, a loyal security agent in the United States diplomatic service and Shaw, a lawless man, a former member of the British military elite, faced off in 2015 in Fast & Furious 7; the two men do everything they can to harm each other.

But when genetically engineered anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gets his hands on a weapon of mass destruction after defeating MI6’s top agent who happens to be Shaw’s (Vanessa Kirby) sister, the two longtime foes go head to head. having to team up to bring down the only opponent capable of annihilating them.

With a budget of $200 million, the action movie grossed $760 million worldwide. If the results did not live up to the expectations of the producers, these figures are still more than honorable. A sequel was therefore quickly announced, but the Covid pandemic put the project on hold.

A sequel in the works since 2020

In March 2020, Dwayne Johnson said on his Instagram account: “We’re developing the next Hobbs & Shaw movie, and I’m really excited about it. Now we just have to get into the creative part, establish the direction that we’re going to take.“

In August 2021, a month after the release of Fast & Furious 9 in which neither Dwayne Johnson nor Jason Statham appeared, producer Hiram Garcia told Collider that Hobbs & Shaw 2 was still in the works.

“After completing Fast 8, Dwayne made the final decision to move on from Fast and Furious, for known reasons. His absence from the sequels does not interfere with our plans for Hobbs and Shaw.

Obviously, all these characters exist in the FF universe and we really like that aspect. We just have different projects with Luke Hobbs and I think the fans are going to love it! We work hard to offer something truly unique and innovative!”

In his interview, the producer alludes to the disagreement between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel. The two actors are indeed scrambled after the filming of Fast & Furious 8, hence the absence of The Rock in the ninth opus.

Fast & Furious 9: Dwayne Johnson will not be in the sequels but will be entitled to Hobbs & Shaw 2

The former wrestler had even announced that he would not return to the parent saga, but would continue to play Luke Hobbs in the spin-offs.

“I wish them the best on Fast & Furious 9. And I wish them the best of luck on 10 and 11 and all the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they make without me.” he said then.

Nevertheless, Dwayne Johnson seems to have gone back on his remarks since he appears in the post-credits scene of Fast & Furious 10. A sequence that suggests the return of the character in Fast 11 and which could advance Hobbs & Shaw 2.

In this scene, an intervention squad enters a theatre. On the stage sits a ringing smartphone. Their boss picks up and Dante Reyes, the antagonist of Fast X played by Jason Momoa, explains to his interlocutor that Dominic Toretto certainly drove the car that hit his father Hernan Reyes in Fast Five, but that the man who finished him shooting him will also know the pain. This man, who is none other than the head of the intervention squad, then takes off his hood: it is Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson.

After attacking Dom and his family, Dante will therefore attack Luke Hobbs. This confrontation could take place in Fast 11 or in Hobbs & Shaw 2 in order to link the spin-off to the parent saga…
