Fatal idea – e-bikers wanted to go to the Alm in the snow and crashed

Classic e-bikes do not qualify as winter sports equipment. Nevertheless, on Thursday two Germans (36 and 44) ventured onto an alpine pasture in the Tyrolean town of Ausserfern. Not a good idea! The duo soon found themselves stuck in the snow. Crossing an icy stream had dire consequences for the Germans.

The Schneetal Alm at 1,650 meters above sea level near Wängle was the destination of the two holidaymakers. The alpine pasture is closed in winter. Nevertheless, the cyclists made their way there. A fatal decision, as it soon became clear. Despite the snow, the duo fought on. When the e-bikers were at an altitude of around 1200 meters, they couldn’t make any further progress because of the snow. According to the police, the forest road was not passable, so the Germans pushed their e-bikes to the alpine pasture, where they arrived at around 1:30 p.m. It was not initially known why the duo fought their way to the mountain pasture despite all the difficulties. Fell 30 meters into the stream bed. The way back was just as difficult and exhausting as the climb. Again the men had to push their e-bikes. At around 4 p.m. they reached a particularly dangerous place: they had to cross an icy stream. Both men slipped on their bikes on the ice, fell around 30 meters and landed in the stream bed. The police helicopter had to be deployed. Completely exhausted, the duo was unable to get back onto the forest path. The men made an emergency call. The police helicopter had to go out to rescue the e-bikers. The uninjured Germans were rescued using rope and brought into the valley.
