Hezbollah’s boss recently called for cell phone abstinence: “Bury it, put it in an iron box and lock it away,” he says. The underlying concern is that Israel could use cell phones as “agents” and thus eliminate opponents in Lebanon through air strikes. His son doesn’t care.
A son of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has caused astonishment in Lebanon because he posted videos on Instagram shortly after his father preached about the dangers of smartphones. Mohammed Mahdi Nasrallah posted two videos for the first time this week on a previously inconspicuous account.
A Hezbollah spokeswoman confirmed the authenticity of the account and videos upon request. In it, Nasrallah’s son, who clearly looks like his father, is shown studying religious texts and explains what he has in mind with the account. He said he wanted to convey religious and cultural content to a young audience in a simple way.
However, this was met with astonishment by many Lebanese. Just a few weeks ago, his father apparently called for cell phone abstinence. “Bury it, put it in an iron box and lock it away for a week, two weeks, a month,” Hassan Nasrallah urged Hezbollah supporters and fighters in the south of the country in a speech in February.
The background is that, in Nasrallah’s opinion, Israel uses cell phones as “agents” to spy on, locate and eliminate its opponents in Lebanon through targeted air strikes. “You ask me, where is the agent. I tell you that the cell phone in your hand, in the hands of your wives and children, is the agent,” Nasrallah said at the time.
However, the Hezbollah spokeswoman did not see this as a contradiction to the social media activities of the Nasrallah offspring. The message was aimed primarily at the fighters, not the general population, she explained.
