BVB is about to gamble away everything

The 34th match day of the Bundesliga was supposed to be a triumph for Borussia Dortmund. But it looks like things are going to be completely different: shortly before the half-time break, FC Bayern Munich is at least the virtual German champion.

Everything seemed to be done: the city of Dortmund has been in a state of emergency since the early morning, hundreds of thousands are on their feet to finally wrap up the long-awaited first BVB championship since 2012. A win against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and everything would be scratched. But things turned out differently: FC Bayern Munich went into half-time as the virtual leaders of the table because everything went wrong at Borussia Dortmund! 1. FSV Mainz 05 leads 2-0 in Dortmund, for which nothing is at stake anymore.

Because Borussia Dortmund falls asleep defensively twice and because striker Sebastien Haller fails just a few seconds after the 0:1 with a poorly shot penalty at Mainz substitute goalkeeper Finn Dahmen. The Black and Yellows then shook off the double shock, but they weren’t able to repair the result.

The mood at the direct pursuer FC Bayern Munich is completely different: The series champion must hope for a Dortmund blunder and must win in Cologne two points behind in order to retain hope of the eleventh German championship in a row. And the record champions deliver: Kingsley Coman put FC Bayern in the lead after just eight minutes. He had read that “the whole city” of Dortmund, 200,000 to 400,000 fans, was expected at a BVB championship celebration, Bayern offensive man Thomas Müller had started the first mind games the night before.

“To meet the expectations of so many people, you have to do that with a broad cross on the pitch,” said Müller. “The players would have to withstand that for the time being. I do believe that the players will also feel this pressure,” said Müller about the BVB professionals. “That’s my hope too, because it would be the most normal thing in the world for them to feel that pressure.” As of 4 p.m., Müller was right: BVB had not withstood the pressure. Borussia Dortmund still has a good half to repair the deficit. A Dortmund draw would also be enough for FC Bayern to win the title due to the better goal difference.
