Union Berlin races through the TV money rankings

FC Bayern is the crowning glory of the Bundesliga, but the German record champions cannot see themselves as winners. At least not when it comes to distributing TV money. Although Munich collects the most this season, they lose less than before. Things are different at Union Berlin in particular.

FC Bayern Munich will remain number one in terms of income from television marketing in the coming season of the Bundesliga. According to a preliminary ranking published by “Kicker”, the German record champions will receive 90.0 million euros in the coming season. However, that actually means slight losses, it is around 200,000 euros less for the Munich team than in the past season. Borussia Dortmund is in second place. BVB can expect 80.8 million euros, 700,000 euros more than last time.

Third is Bayer Leverkusen, which, thanks to reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League, will receive more money from international TV marketing and can therefore expect 78.5 million euros (+3.0 million euros). With 77.6 million euros and a minus of 700,000 euros, DFB Cup winner RB Leipzig is fourth in fourth place.

In total, the German Football League (DFL) distributes around 1.3 billion euros in TV money to the 36 clubs in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. Just over one billion euros go to the 18 clubs in the 1st Bundesliga, only 300 million euros to the second division. The two promoted players in particular benefit: second division champions 1. FC Heidenheim can look forward to 36.1 million euros and thus 22.5 million more than in 2022/23. SV Darmstadt 98 receives 32.5 million euros after last 14.6 million euros.

Gladbach one of the losers

1. FC Union has the biggest increase behind the promoted team. The Berliners, who qualified for the Champions League for the first time, recorded a plus of 11.1 million euros and are sixth in the ranking with 66.0 million euros. In addition, there is the TV money from UEFA. As a participant in the premier class, the club is already guaranteed a further 15.6 million euros in entry fee for this alone. SC Freiburg also collects significantly more than before, they improve in the ranking from 9th to 7th place and take a plus of 7.8 million euros with them. There is also 3.63 million euros in seed capital for entry into the Europa League.

FC Augsburg (+1.1 million), VfB Stuttgart (+2.2 million), Werder Bremen (+4.1 million) and VfL Bochum (+5.1 million) benefit from the relegations from Hertha BSC and FC Schalke 04: they have so far ranked behind the future second division teams and have now moved up to better-paid places. In addition to those who were relegated, TSG Hoffenheim and Borussia Mönchengladbach are also big losers in the rankings due to their bad seasons. They get 7.1 and 6.1 million euros less than in the previous season.

First of all, each Bundesliga club receives a flat rate of 26 million euros from national marketing via an “equal distribution”, plus an additional 3 million euros from international marketing. In addition, the international funds then make the big difference. In a five-year ranking, the European Cup participants benefit from this income from the DFL. Two points are awarded for each win in this ranking, and one point for a draw. Each point is worth around 230,000 euros.

In addition to the provisional calculations, there are now funds for the deployment times of the talents. These have yet to be evaluated, but these are amounts of a maximum of 400,000 euros.
