Müller flirted with a move to England

An interview that the Bayern officials shouldn’t like at all: Thomas Müller is openly thinking about moving abroad. England seems to have done it to him, especially Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Pep Guardiola’s Man City. Müller also comments on his EM hopes.

Thomas Müller is not flying through half of Europe as part of the DFB team these days, because national coach Joachim Löw has not (yet) reactivated him. And that’s why the Bayern Munich professional has more time than usual. Time that he now used to the British Times to give an interview. Of course, that’s nothing special at first. But both those responsible at the record champions and at any clubs abroad will have read certain statements by the “spatial interpreter” (the “Times” dug out the term designed by Müller especially for Müller in 2011).

Because as well as the ex-and-maybe-soon-again-national player performs this year, it is apparently unclear whether Müller will end his career at Bayern (contract until 2023). “I’m not committed to this club,” the 31-year-old told the English newspaper. The statement of the original Bavarian may come as a surprise to one or the other, after all, Müller grew up in a Bavarian village and spent his entire career with the German record champions. But even if it is hard to imagine that he would play for anyone else, in autumn 2019 it almost came to that. Under the then coach Niko Kovac, Müller was permanently banished to the bank, protested against it several times and flirted with a change. But not he, but Kovac had to go. Hansi Flick came, Müller became irreplaceable again – and the rest is history.

“I have a special relationship with the club, I loved Bayern even before I started playing for them,” the 31-year-old told the Times. “But if there is a situation where you have to decide whether to play for another club, it would be no shame and no problem at all.” A move to the island seems to be a serious option for the “spatial interpreter”. After all, Müller is considered a fan of English football. In an interview with the newspaper, he also praised his former coach Pep Guardiola, now coach at Manchester City. “I like it”, “I like it (there)”, said Müller about England as a place. However, he does not (yet) understand all dialects.

Apparently, Müller could also imagine a commitment to Liverpool FC and team manager Jürgen Klopp. “Maybe it will work like it did with Thiago,” he speculated with regard to possible change scenarios. The Spaniard had migrated to the Reds on the island in the summer after many years at FC Bayern. Wherever he went, the 31-year-old explained that titles continued to motivate him and that he always wanted to be number one: “I want to be the best. The best in my position and the best in the German league with my team.”

In addition, the Rio world champion reaffirmed in the conversation that he was still waiting for Jogi Löw to call. “I hope there is a chance that I will be seen at the European Championship,” said the 100-time international (38 goals). “But we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks.” Unlike Müller, the national coach is traveling through half of Europe these days and therefore has less time for a phone call. Löw only wants to make a comeback of the sorted trio Müller, Jérome Boateng and Mats Hummels in May. At this point, Müller will definitely still play for Bayern – how much longer is unclear after the interview.
