FCZ celebrates a 2-1 home win – Ceesay takes away the last championship chances from YB – Sport

  • FC Zurich beat the Young Boys 2-1 at home thanks to double goalscorer Assan Ceesay.
  • This means that the Bernese can no longer mathematically become champions after the 30th Super League round.
  • In the evening game, GC meets Servette away (from 8:30 p.m. here in the live ticker).

The FCZ is back on the master course. After the leader had only scored 4 points from the last 4 games, the Zurich team once again proved their strengths in the top game against YB. They showed their quick switching game twice and were up 2-0 up to the 61st minute.

Assan Ceesay scored both goals. The FCZ top scorer got back on track at the same time as his club, he hadn’t scored in the last 5 games. Hits number 15 and 16 were added on Saturday:

  • 33 minutes: After winning the ball in midfield, Antonio Marchesano plays precisely into the interface to Ceesay, who skillfully nets the ball to make it 1-0 with his left foot.
  • 61 minutes: FCZ switches again at lightning speed and counters YB. Aiyegun Tosin reaches Ceesay with a cross pass in the box, who raises ice cold.

The Bernese actually started the game better. At the beginning there was a lot more pressure from the still champions, while the FCZ presented themselves as frighteningly passive. Despite the superiority and 7 corner balls, YB couldn’t create any good chances for a long time in the first 13 minutes.

After about half an hour, the people of Zurich got into the game better – and thanks to their usual efficiency, they fought for the lead. Mohamed Camara, for example, posed a threat twice (43rd/67th) for the guests, but there was no sign of a goal.

It was only with the first quick, no-frills YB attack and a relay pass that the goal came back: league top scorer Jordan Siebatcheu (19 goals in total) reduced the lead in the 73rd minute.

Overall, however, the Bernese remained too harmless and were no longer capable of more than this 1: 2. With 6 laps to go they are 19 points behind the leader FCZ and can no longer catch up mathematically.

So after 4 YB championship titles in a row, the series is definitely breaking. Under the new coach Matteo Vanetta they remained without a win in the 5th game, in total this bear market has lasted for 7 games. FC Lugano is also breathing down the club’s neck: If the Ticino team won in Lausanne on Monday, YB would fall back to fourth place, which does not entitle them to participate in the European Cup.

Here’s how to proceed

Next Saturday, FCZ will play another home game, then FC Sion will make a guest appearance at Letzigrund (live on SRF from 5:30 p.m.). The Young Boys receive the Servettiens that same evening.
