- In the future, employees should be able to deduct their professional expenses from their taxes as a lump sum.
- The Federal Council has submitted a corresponding legislative proposal for consultation.
- Employed persons should in future be able to choose whether they deduct their professional expenses in the tax return as a lump sum or effectively, as announced by the Federal Council.
This should simplify the deduction and, in particular, make no difference between working from home and working in the company. The finance department will determine how high the lump sum will be.
Actual costs can still be deducted
Instead of the lump sum, the actual costs can also be deducted. The costs for mobile working can now also be deducted if the employer provides a workplace.
As part of these actual costs, the travel costs and the additional costs for external meals and a week’s stay remain deductible. As before, a maximum (3,200 francs from the 2023 tax period) applies to direct federal tax for travel expenses.
The lump sum should not have any financial impact on the federal government. It is therefore currently expected to be in the order of 6,000 francs, it said. The lump sum should also apply to cantonal taxes. How high this is there is left to the cantons. The consultation lasts until April 4, 2023.
