Klette’s arrest warrant is opened in Karlsruhe

Daniela Klette has been in custody since the end of February. Because the Federal Prosecutor’s Office is also investigating her, the 65-year-old is taken to Karlsruhe. There the highest prosecution authority issues the arrest warrant to her. She accuses the RAF terrorist of two bomb attacks and attempted murder.

The federal prosecutor’s arrest warrant, which was obtained years ago, has been opened to former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette. The Karlsruhe authorities said she was strongly suspected of attempted murder in two cases as well as attempted and completed explosive explosions as an accomplice. According to a spokeswoman, membership in the terrorist organization Red Army Faction (RAF) has now expired. This doesn’t change anything for Klette’s pre-trial detention, where she has been in custody since the end of February due to an arrest warrant from the Verden district court.

Specifically, Klette is accused by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office of having carried out an explosive attack on the Weiterstadt correctional facility under construction in Hesse in March 1993, together with the still wanted RAF terrorists Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg. The explosion caused damage to the building amounting to around 63 million euros. Klette is also said to have attempted with other RAF members to carry out an explosive attack on a Deutsche Bank building in Eschborn in February 1990. The explosive did not detonate because the ignition failed. In addition, according to investigators’ findings, Klette and RAF members fired at least 250 shots at the US embassy in Bad Godesberg near Bonn in February 1991.

Germany’s highest prosecutor’s office announced that over-arrest had been made. This is what it is called when someone is already in custody or in custody and an arrest warrant is still being issued. However, this will only play a role if something changes in the current pre-trial detention, obtained by the Verden public prosecutor’s office.

Robberies: Further proceedings in Lower Saxony

The 65-year-old Klette was arrested on February 26th in her apartment in Kreuzberg. She is said to have lived there for around 20 years without a rental agreement. When the police searched the approximately 40 square meter social apartment, they found, among other things, a grenade and explosives. The police are still on duty in the building.

The proceedings in Lower Saxony are also directed against the former RAF terrorists Staub and Garweg, who are still in hiding. This also concerns the suspicion of attempted murder and various serious robberies on supermarkets and cash-in-transit vehicles in the period from 1999 to 2016, i.e. after the RAF was disbanded. “According to the constitutional distribution of competences between the federal and state governments, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office would not be able to take over the investigation into this matter,” explained the Federal Prosecutor’s Office.
