Femicide in the Var: a woman killed by her husband after the departure of the police: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Emotions run high in Sanary-sur-Mer and more precisely in the Guicharde district. The Var was the scene of a new feminicide which took place on Friday February 2, 2024. A 64-year-old woman was killed with a knife by her 69-year-old spouse at their home. The events took place around 4 p.m. The police were called back by the husband who immediately indicated that he had “killed his wife with a knife” as detailed in the press release from the Toulon prosecutor, Samuel Finielz and reported by France Blue. But the most worrying thing about this case is that the police had gone to the couple’s home a few hours earlier, around 2:30 p.m. They had been called by the woman herself. On site, they observed “their respective state of alcoholism and the existence of a marital dispute”. The victim then explains that she does not wish to file a complaint and her husband decides to spontaneously hand it over to the police. “several weapons and ammunition” which he held illegally. After checks, the police discovered that the couple was not known to the courts.

The police went to the victim’s home

They leave again and it is only a few minutes later that the terrible tragedy takes place. An administrative investigation was opened: “In order to determine whether the rules for intervention and handling of this type of situation were respected, an administrative investigation, parallel to the judicial investigation, was ordered by the interdepartmental police director” as indicated by the prosecutor. The accused, for his part, must be referred on Sunday February 4, 2024 pending the opening of a judicial investigation for homicide by spouse. The Var is once again bereaved by a tragedy of this kind. Since the start of 2024, this is the third femicide to take place in the region. In Grimaud, a 29-year-old woman, victim of her partner last weekend, is still in serious condition. The government is trying to put everything in place to drastically reduce this sad figure of one victim every three days, and thus lower the toll of the Ministry of the Interior which reported 118 feminicides in 2022.
