Numerous authors advocate for women’s rights and gender equality, because equality has unfortunately still not been achieved. These five feminist books are worth reading.

Feminism is one of the big issues of our time because Unfortunately, equality between men and women is not yet a reality. Millions of women worldwide face discrimination in their daily lives when accessing education or healthcare, are victims of human trafficking or physical violence, and are more likely to experience poverty.

In Germany too, we are still a long way from gender equality, because unfortunately Women are still paid less than men and are significantly less likely to reach leadership positions than their male colleagues. According to the Federal Statistical Office, only just under one in three managers in Germany in 2021 was female. Reason enough to continue to stand up for equality. That’s exactly what the authors of these five books do.

Simone de Beauvoir: The Opposite Sex (1949)

An absolute classic in the field of feminist literature: In her book “The opposite sex” describes the French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir social structures that force roles on women and push them into dependence on men. De Beauvoir shows ways to achieve greater equality, which have lost none of their relevance with regard to the compatibility of family and work or the demand for equal pay.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: More feminism! (2014)

The humorous TED talk “We should all be feminists” by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie caused a stir worldwide. The video was viewed millions of times and the fashion house Dior later printed the slogan on its T-shirts. Adichie names the damage that patriarchy has caused in society and calls on women and men to do so to stand up for a fairer world. You can find her in the book “More Feminism”. TED talk translated into German and four short stories by Adichie, in which she also addresses feminist themes.
