Ferrari is evolving, but not necessarily in the right direction


Italian supercar maker, Ferrari, has released the first teaser image of its upcoming SUV, known as the Purosangue. The growing demand for SUVs, already met by Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Porsche, will therefore have pushed the Italian brand to take the plunge. On the other hand, the 100% electric will still wait.

After a long period of rumours, Ferrari has confirmed that an SUV will indeed be launched. the tweet is accompanied by a high-contrast image that allows you to discover the first shapes of the vehicle. This SUV would bear the name of Ferrari Purosangue.

It is a unique car in the Ferrari catalog which breaks with 75 years of history: the Ferrari Purosangue is an SUV… even if it is described as a UVF (Ferrari Utility Vehicle), with a slightly raised lift height and styling, but relatively low ground clearance.

It is amazing to see Ferrari design an SUV. Nevertheless, remember that this is the category of cars that currently sells the most. This category is an absolutely fascinating textbook case, since there is no other type of vehicle that unleashes so much criticism, while it achieves around 40% market share in a good part of the automotive world.

In Europe, on the 100% electric market, 1 out of 2 cars sold is an SUV (February 2022). The SUV sells very well and yet is criticized for its energy efficiency, but also criticized by automotive purists, ” too high, too big, too heavy and too greedy“.

Ferrari is rumored to be preparing two powertrains. The first would probably be one of, if not the last, iterations of a naturally aspirated V12. It’s likely there will be at least some form of electrification, such as a 48V mild-hybrid system. Note, however, that many rumors revolve around this SUV: it would thus be developed on the basis of a brand new platform, also eligible for full electrification.

Finally, its expected base price would be 300,000 euros, more details are expected from May 2022.

Ferrari has already designed a PHEV

Ferrari has already designed a first car with PHEV (plug-in hybrid) architecture. The Ferrari SF90 Stradale is a model that combines a combustion engine (V8 turbo at 780 hp) and three electric motors (for 220 hp more), which allows you to exceed 1000 hairs. With this quartet of engines, it offers acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2.5 seconds.

In 100% electric, when only the electric motors are activated, Ferrari promises 25 km of autonomy. It can accelerate in this mode up to 125 km/h, it is also a way to access the city centers which will be reserved for zero emissions in the future.

100% electric at Ferrari? Not immediately

Although a plug-in hybrid version is expected, the first Ferrari SUV should therefore not be 100% electric. Anyway, at first.

In 2021, Ferrari, and more precisely John Elkann the CEO of the group, announced that the first 100% electric Ferrari will see the light of day in 2025: “ You can be sure it will be everything you dream of. Maranello engineers and designers will leave no room for chance in their history “.

It must be said that the Italian firm is behind its competitors. Porsche, for example, has already taken the lead in the electric segment: with the Taycan, the German manufacturer can boast of being present in the sector with one of the most efficient cars on its market. The model was declined in several variants, including the GTS Sport, the Cross Turismo and the Sport Turismo.

On the SUV side, Porsche is preparing a new version of the Macan with a “zero emission” engine, which is scheduled for 2023.

Remember, however, that the SUV is not the best candidate for complete electrification: its shape, its aerodynamic efficiency and its weight are not optimized. The SUV consumes more kWh and therefore has less autonomy than a sedan, with an equivalent battery. This can be seen when comparing the Model 3 to Tesla’s Model Y.
