Thanks to removable batteries, long charging times for electric cars become obsolete. The Stellantis Group is now announcing a partnership with Ample to bring the technology to Europe.
It could all be so simple: Instead of spending a long time at the charging station and filling the battery of the electric car, you can simply exchange empty batteries for full ones in a matter of minutes on some e-scooters. The Chinese car manufacturer Nio also offers such technology for its electric cars.
But as useful and suitable for everyday use as removable batteries may seem, the technology has not yet been able to gain widespread acceptance in this country. Presumably also because there are no uniform standards. This news, however, makes you sit up and take notice: Stellantis has teamed up with the US provider Ample with the aim of promoting the topic of removable batteries in Europe.

The Stellantis Group includes well-known car brands such as Fiat, Citroën, Peugeot, Alfa Romeo and Opel. The now announced collaboration with the US company Ample stipulates that Stellantis will equip its own electric vehicles with Ample’s removable battery technology. The popular Fiat 500e will be the group’s first electric car model.
As part of the agreement, a test fleet consisting of 100 Fiat 500e models in Madrid, Spain, will be equipped with replaceable batteries from Ample. The vehicles operate under the group’s Free2move car sharing label. The aim is to initially gain experience with the technology with these hundred vehicles, says Stellantis.
“Among other projects we are focused on, Ample’s modular battery replacement solution offers the opportunity to provide our customers with greater energy efficiency, excellent performance and reduced range anxiety. We look forward to executing the first program with our Fiat 500e.” says Ricardo Stamatti from Stellantis.
After Spain and Madrid, other areas in which removable battery technology will be used will follow. Where exactly has not yet been communicated.
