Dominant Carlsen wins World Chess Championship

For the fourth time Magnus Carlsen is defending his title as world chess champion. However, challenger Jan Nepomnjaschtschi does not manage to pose serious problems for the Norwegian. In the 11th of a maximum of 14 games, the decision is made in favor of Carlsen.

Magnus Carlsen easily defended his world title at the World Chess Championship in Dubai. The 31-year-old Norwegian made everything clear against his Russian challenger Jan Nepomnjaschtschi in the 11th of a maximum of 14 games and took the chess crown for the fifth time with a fourth win and a score of 7.5: 3.5 on.

Carlsen has been world champion since 2013 and successfully defended his title for the fourth time in a row after 2014 (against Viswanathan Anand), 2016 (against Sergej Karjakin) and 2018 (against Fabiano Caruana). Against Nepomnjaschtschi Carlsen won twice with the white and black pieces, the first five games had all ended in a draw. In addition, Carlsen was able to look forward to prize money of 1.2 million euros, Nepomnyashchi received 800,000 euros.

The next World Chess Championship is to take place either at the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023, as the world association FIDE had announced in advance. The eight-part Candidates Tournament, in which Carlsen’s next challenger will be determined, is slated to take place in the second half of next year.
