Fight Club: after being censored, the film finds its end in China

After being censored when it was uploaded to Chinese streaming platform Tencent Video, David Fincher’s feature film has finally found its famous final scene.

A few days ago, 23 years after its release in American theaters, Fight Club, the famous psychological thriller by David Fincher, was broadcast on the Chinese streaming platform Tencent Video… with a conclusion totally different from the one that we know.

Indeed, to the surprise of many spectators, the famous final scene of the feature film had been purely and simply censored there. Instead of showing – as in the original cut of the film – the character of Edward Norton contemplating the gigantic explosion caused by his evil alter ego Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), the film cuts just before, and announces to the public that the attack had finally been foiled by the police.

“Thanks to the clues provided by Tyler, the police quickly figured out his whole plan and arrested the criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from detonating”announced a card. “After his trial, Tyler was sent to an insane asylum where he received psychological treatment. He was discharged from hospital in 2012.”

This totally watered-down ending, offering the public a completely different point of view, was quick to make people talk about it around the world, triggering strong reactions among fans of the original film. Enough to force the Tencent Video platform to backtrack, and return Fight Club to its original end.

So, according to The Wrap, 11 of the 12 minutes that were cut from Fincher’s film were eventually restored. Only the sex or nudity scenes (and in particular the subliminal final shot) remained censored.
