Film tops $ 1 billion at box office for first time since Covid

According to the colossal number of tickets sold to see the last Spider-Man, the cinema still weighs heavily against streaming platforms. The new Spider-Man became the first film of the Covid era to garner more than a billion dollars, during the Christmas weekend in the box office, indicated Sunday Exhibitor Relations, a firm specializing in the film industry.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home”, starring British star Tom Holland, raised $ 467.3 million in North America and $ 587 million internationally, or over $ 1 billion over 12 days, confirming analysts’ expectations.

He thus joins “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which had achieved this performance in 2015, according to Variety magazine, despite the spread of Omicron, the highly contagious variant of Covid-19 which is now disturbing the whole world. With an estimated sum of 23.8 million dollars, “Sing 2” was the headliner of the weekend.

He beat “The Matrix: Resurrections” and “The King’s Man” which got $ 12 million and $ 6.4 million respectively. “American Underdog,” based on the real-life story of Kurt Warner, who from supermarket worker to National Football League (NFL) top player, sits in fifth place with $ 6.2 million.
