films by David Cronenberg, James Gray and the Dardenne brothers among the 18 in competition

The latest films by David Cronenberg, James Gray, the Dardenne brothers and even Ruben Östlund will be in the running for the Palme d’Or in May, announced on Thursday April 14, the general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Frémaux, during of the presentation press conference.

In total, eighteen films have been announced for the most prestigious film competition in the world, including three from female directors: the French Claire Denis and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, and the American Kelly Reichardt.

The Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov, who left his country legally to settle in Berlin, will be in official competition with a historical film around the composer Tchaikovsky. The director, for the third time in competition (Leto and Petrov Fever), is also a director and will open the Festival d’Avignon in July.
