A Game Boy Advance emulator is a hit on the App Store… before being withdrawn
This weekend, some of you may have had the opportunity to try the iGBA emulator on your iPhone, going back more than twenty years. Indeed, last week, this Game Boy Advance game emulator was officially the very first to have been approved by Apple on its store Very quickly climbed to the top of the ranking of the most downloaded applications on the App Store, iGBA was not ultimately not the emulator it claimed to be, thus leading to its permanent removal.
As reported to us by our colleagues from MacRumorsthe emulator, supposedly developed by a certain Mattia La Spina, was removed from the App Store for violating the company’s app review guidelines related to spam and copyright.
As improbable as it may seem, the firm led by Tim Cook would, in truth, have approved an imitation of the open source GBA4iOS application on its platform. As a reminder, this emulator was designed and imagined by developer Riley Testut in 2014.
Apple clearly lacked vigilance
According to information reported by The Verge, Testut confirmed that the iGBA emulator was indeed a clone of its own application. In addition to being full of advertisements, the latter would collect users’ personal data (notably location data) without their consent in order to be able to identify them.
For his part, La Spina has not openly confirmed having reused the code from GBA4iOS. On the other hand, he apologized in an e-mail sent to our colleagues at The Vergealso claiming not to have imagined that the application would generate such enthusiasm on the App Store.
At the time of writing, Apple has not communicated the official reason why it decided to remove iGBA from its store. However, everything suggests that the brand with the bitten apple would have considered that the application had simply copied the work of another person (that of Riley Testut in this case).
Before its removal from the App Store, iGBA allowed users to play Game Boy Advance games by loading free ROMs downloaded from the web. Let’s now hope that future emulators to be approved by Apple will benefit from a more attentive look in order to avoid unpleasant surprises…

The fact remains that Apple is making all the right choices this year to bring its “standard” range up to speed, where the Pro models tended to take too big a lead in terms of design as well as in terms of performance.
