Financial aid also in default: Ukraine is still waiting for a large part of heavy weapons

Ukraine is still waiting for a large part of heavy weapons

In the west, there is broad-based military and financial support for Ukraine, but according to the Institute for the World Economy, a large part of this has not yet reached the country. According to this, some states are spending much more money to alleviate the consequences of the war – especially Germany.

According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), Ukraine has not yet received at least a quarter of the heavy weapons promised by the West. “The donor countries have so far delivered between 65 and 75 percent of the promised heavy weapons to Ukraine,” said IfW expert Andre Frank to the newspapers of the editorial network Germany (RND). The delay in financial aid from the two largest donors, the USA and the EU, is even greater. “So far, only about half of their commitments have been paid out.”

This week, France will fulfill another promise and hand over AMX-10 infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine. The delivery should therefore take place around the first anniversary of the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine on February 24. France did not provide any information on the number of tanks, so as not to provide Russia with strategically important information.

According to the RND newspapers, the IfW data also shows that Germany primarily spends money to alleviate its own consequences of the war. “No other country in Europe has spent as much money on alleviating the consequences of the war as Germany – in absolute figures and also in terms of GDP,” said Frank. Germany spends more than twice as much on this as Great Britain, Italy, France or Spain, for example.

“The tank discount and the 9-euro ticket together cost as much as the entire German aid for Ukraine,” Frank told the RND newspapers. Other European countries would also have spent significantly more money on combating the consequences of the war than on supporting Ukraine. “Many have spent ten times as much, some even fifty times as much to alleviate the consequences of the war for their own people.”
