Jean-Noël Barrot warns Elon Musk: if Twitter does not respect European rules, then the social network is liable to sanctions. The Minister Delegate in charge of the Digital Transition takes stock in the program Europe 1 Evening Weekend this Saturday, the day after his meeting with the whimsical multi-billionaire passing through Paris. Elon Musk “agrees with the spirit of the European regulations, but the question is what means (human, financial) he gives himself to enforce them”, he wonders, then putting in keep the CEO.

“This is what the European Commission will be vigilant from August 25. Twitter is liable to fines of up to 6% of global turnover, that is to say approximately 300 million euros, and in the event of repeated failure, excluding the territory of the European Union”, explains the minister at the microphone of Pierre de Vilno.

The signals sent by Twitter “rather worrying”

The blue bird network must actually follow the regulation that the EU adopted in 2022, recalls Jean-Noël Barrot. “He says that the major social media platforms and marketplaces have responsibilities, that they must allow their users to report illegal content and that they must moderate, remove this content”, indicates the Minister of Transition digital. The latter, however, believes that “the signals sent by Twitter in recent months are rather worrying”, referring to the network’s exit from the European Union’s code of good practice last May.

The reaffirmation of the position of France and the EU should not, however, interfere with another file concerning Elon Musk, that of the establishment of a Tesla battery factory in France rather than in Spain. “I don’t think we should put the two subjects in the balance,” says Jean-Noël Barrot. “Twitter is a very small part of its industrial empire, and the subjects of space, of the electric vehicle, cannot be disturbed by these regulatory questions.”
