Defending champion Sweden defeats Finland in a penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals of the Floorball World Championships in Zurich.

After 5 out of 10 penalties, things looked pitch-black for Sweden in the World Cup semi-final against Finland. While the first two Swedes had failed in their attempts, 2 of 3 Finns sunk the ball in the goal. But “Suomi” subsequently failed to close the sack.

Finally, Robin Nilsberth had to score the 10th penalty in order to keep the Swedes’ chances for the final alive. And that’s exactly what the 33-year-old, who is under contract with Zug United in Switzerland, did – and how! Nilsberth withstood the great pressure and nibbled the Finnish goalie with a “trick shot”.

In the overtime of the penalty shoot-out it was finally Alexander Galante Carlström who secured the much-celebrated victory for Sweden.

Finland’s standing qualities remain unrewarded

In the regular season, the two floorball heavyweights balanced each other out for long stretches. Sweden took a 2-0 and later a 3-1 lead in the second period, but the Finns closed the gap to 2-3 before the end of the middle period. Finland’s persistence paid off in the final period when Otto Lehkosuo made it 3-3 with just under 5 minutes left.

Both teams had chances in extra time, but they didn’t want to score another goal. And so a dramatic penalty shootout had to decide who was the first finalist.
