Fire brigade called for – environmental alarm: Large amounts of heating oil in the Raababach

For days, the fire brigade in Raaba-Grambach has been fighting against a fuel oil leak into a creek. Damage to the environment cannot yet be estimated.

A walker noticed traces of oil in the Raababach on Thursday and alerted the fire brigade. The result was a large-scale operation for the emergency services; Oil barriers were erected and the source of the spillage sealed in a company’s rainwater sewer. During a check on Friday, the environmental alarm had to be called again. The water level had risen overnight and ice floes had formed. In consultation with the chemical alarm service of the state of Styria, the fire brigade built a dam to strengthen the seal at the exit point and a makeshift oil separator. In addition, an attempt is made to remove the leaked oil using a binding agent. Because it always freezes at night, this will take several days. It is still unclear how much oil flowed into the stream and what the consequences are for the environment.
