Fire brigade in action – freight train carrying fuel derailed near Wels

Train partially derailed and fuel leaking – that was the situation on the train route between Wels and Marchtrenk. On Friday afternoon, several wagons overturned near Wels. A major fire brigade operation was still underway in the evening.

Four wagons are believed to have jumped off the rails between Wels marshalling yard and Wels main station. The immediately adjacent western route was closed between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. for safety reasons. The train route was still blocked for local traffic in the evening hours. The ÖBB set up replacement rail services. Wagons are sealed. The freight train may have loaded tank wagons, so the overturned tank wagons contained fuel. The Wels fire brigade, with 24 men on duty, tried in the early evening hours to seal the cars, contain the leaking liquid and determine the extent of the damage. Luckily no one was injured. The cause of the accident is not yet known.
