Since Wednesday, half a dozen investigators from the Criminal Research Institute of the National Gendarmerie have been hard at work carrying out investigations inside the buildings. Jean-David Cavaillé, the public prosecutor of Perpignan, opened an investigation for “arson resulting in death” and predicted that it was going to be complex. In the press conference he held on Tuesday evening, he admitted that it was not yet known whether the fire preceded the explosion or the reverse, and considered that it would be necessary “at least three to four days of work for the experts to understand what happened”. And repeated that it was necessary “consider a track that may be criminal”.
