More and more German cities are calling for firework ban zones on New Year’s Eve. We will explain to you where there is a ban on firecrackers for New Year’s Eve 2023/24.

To protect the environment and people, more and more cities across Germany are enacting firecracker ban zones on New Year’s Eve. Because on hardly any other day is the gathering of people as large as on the night of December 31st to January 1st. In addition, this night there is, among other things, increased waste production and noise pollution.

Below we will give you an overview of the places in Germany where fireworks bans apply for New Year’s Eve 2023/2024. Regardless of the special regulations of individual federal states or cities, there is generally a ban on fireworks in the vicinity of hospitals, children’s and old people’s homes, churches and thatched and half-timbered houses.

Rules for the sale of fireworks

The sale of fireworks is permitted from December 28th to December 31st this year. Small fireworks (class F1) may be sold all year round and can be purchased by people as young as 12 years old. However, to purchase small fireworks (class F2), you must be at least 18 years old.

Additional fireworks ban zones in Berlin

After the riots last year, additional fireworks ban zones apply in the capital. In total, fireworks bans apply in four locations on New Year’s Eve. As usual, there is a general ban on private fireworks for the celebrations on the party mile at the Brandenburg Gate. A corresponding ban also applies to Alexanderplatz and the Schöneberger Steinmetzkiez. There is also a ban on firecrackers in the northern section of Sonnenallee from Hermannplatz.
