Fires: Carrefour asks “each store manager” to “release” volunteer firefighters


Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin yesterday called on employers to let their volunteer firefighters join the firefighters already mobilized during the month of August.

We ask each store and warehouse manager to release our colleagues from their professional obligations who can leave as reinforcements“, declared on Twitter the boss of the Carrefour group, Alexandre Bompard. At a time when fires resume in Gironde, Jura, Maine-et-Loire or even Drôme, the business manager underlined his “huge respect and support” at “all fire fighters“.

The day before, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin had made the same request, calling on employers to release their employees who are “volunteer firefighters, so that they can join their fellow firefighters, anywhere in the territory“.

More than 1,000 firefighters mobilized in Gironde

In addition, after the significant resumption of fires in Gironde which have ravaged more than 6,000 hectares since Tuesday, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced on Twitter the mobilization of “1000 firefighters” and of “9 water bomber planes and 2 helicoptersadditional. Some 10,000 people were evacuated, including 2,000 in the Landes department. The Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, and the Minister of the Interior are expected in Gironde this Thursday. In total, at least 40,000 hectares have burned in France this year, according to the government. Germany, Greece, Poland, Romania and Austria help or will help France “in the next few hours“to deal with the fires which are ravaging in particular the Gironde in the south-west of the country, announced Thursday Emmanuel Macron, welcoming the “european solidarity“.
