Firewall Ultra will be the first PlayStation VR 2 game running Unreal Engine 5

If you already find the PSVR 2 technically impressive, what follows should interest you. First Contact Entertainment revealed that Firewall Ultra (the sequel to Firewall Zero Hour on PSVR 1) will work under Unreal Engine 5.

This is in an interview conducted by Epic Games (creator of engines UnrealEngineamong others) that the studio unveiled all the challenges that this new engine entails :

This is an adventure in unknown territory. There is literally no guide on how to do this. It’s a journey of discovery and, to be honest, we’re still learning. We hope others will see what is possible with this engine and on this platform, we also hope they will understand that it is more than possible to create the best VR experiences ever. We don’t want to deliver something that would be “good for a VR game”, we just want to make great games in VR. Besides, we have never been able to accept that such and such a thing is not possible in VR.

When other people do hand flutter we do full body representation, when others teleport we go for smooth movement.

great games in VRthis is what players are waiting for and, if it is true, engine intakeepic could make it easier for other studios to produce the equivalent of AAA of our living room consoles.

I’Unreal Engine 5 brought Lumeni.e. real-time lighting, where studios previously had to cheat to bring the desired insights. The engine allows you to go faster in the creation, with a result much more eloquent than in the past and without drastically reducing the performance of the game:

The choice of our engine was an important factor for the future. We don’t see this as just dressing up. When your goal is to create as immersive an experience as possible, the closer we can get to the real light and dark experience, the richer the experience will be.

There are two key ways to take advantage of real-time lighting and both benefit the player immensely. The first is to reward player actions with impactful effects. This can come from flashlights, blinding bombs, explosions, etc., or anything that makes combat much more intense and immersive.

The other is to use real-time lights for dramatic effect in the environment. With environmental lights, we generally look for opportunities to use light to help players better understand the environment. In other situations, the light could influence your strategy. In other words, you may need to become more aware of light and/or shadow to gain the advantage.

Besides the graphic aspect, First Contact Entertainment specifies that it would be useless to use an accessory like the PSVR Aim Controller or one Gunstock so much the PSVR 2Sense does the job. Another clarification, HDR support has been confirmed.

Like Gran Turismo 7 orHorizon Call of the Mountain, THE gameplay at 60 fps has been guaranteed, which means Firewall Ultra will use reprojection to reach 120 Hz, which is very surprising for a game running on an engine known for its resource savings. We’ll see once the game is in hand, but we would like, as is the case on consoles, to be able to choose ourselves the frame rate of the game, the definition, activate or not the reprojection, etc. No specific release date has been given, but the title is nevertheless scheduled to be released this year.

THE PlayStation VR 2 is already available and you can expand your toy library via gift cards playstation available on Amazon.co.uk.
