First birth of a giraffe at the Amnéville zoo

Last week, an extraordinary event took place at the Amnéville en Moselle zoo. A baby Rotschild's giraffe, a rare subspecies, has been born! This is a great first for the park in the Grand Est region.

Pink notebook! A very rare birth took place at the Amnéville zoo, in Moselle. The healers will remember it all their lives! Indeed, on September 28, a female giraffe is born. This is a very rare occurrence since the annual births of baby giraffes in France are very few. The little giraffe is 1.75 meters tall and weighs 57 kilos. Like his mother Liana, the baby is doing very well.

Zoo keepers Dylan and Thomas feel relieved after monitoring giraffe Liana's 15-month pregnancy and then giving birth. "The baby is falling from quite a height, and it's the shock that will actually stimulate the baby", explained the first to LCI while the second was still moved by this magical birth. "These are images engraved for life", he assured. The baby giraffe is in good health and wasted no time in standing on its feet. For the moment, he is closely watched but will soon be able to enjoy the 38 hectares of the park.

The baby is one of Rotschild's giraffes, a rare subspecies. "This subspecies of giraffe, Rotschild's giraffe, has become rare. There are less than 1,600 left in the wild", said Thomas Grangeat, ethologist and educational manager at the Amnéville zoo. Kenya has decided to react and has put in place a national plan to save giraffes.

"Zoological parks are not only places where we conserve, we do education, but also research. We study these animals there, to get to know them better in nature.", he then said.

In adulthood, this giraffe will measure about 5 meters high and will not have spots on its legs, a distinctive sign of this subspecies which lives, in the wild, in Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda.

For now, the baby does not yet have a first name. The Amnéville zoo will be offering several on social networks in the coming days. To your votes!
