Pudenz wins discus silver in the rain chaos

Because of a rain shower, the Olympic final of the discus throwers is temporarily interrupted. The German champion Kristin Pudenz can not be disturbed by this – and throws a personal best after the restart. She will then be rewarded with the silver medal.

Discus thrower Kristin Pudenz from Potsdam surprisingly won silver at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The 28-year-old finished second on Monday with her personal best of 66.86 meters in her fifth attempt. After her silver coup, Pudenz, who had problems with the Achilles tendon again and again this year, shed tears of happiness. It was the first medal for the German athletes in Tokyo.

Pudenz also gave the German discus throwers the first medal since Ilke Wyludda won gold in 1996 in Atlanta. The American Valarie Allman (68.98) was the Olympic champion in the competition, which was affected by a one-hour rain break. Yaime Perez from Cuba came in third (65.72).

Marike Steinacker from Leverkusen was eighth with 62.02 meters. Claudine Vita from Neubrandenburg missed the final fight of the eight best discus throwers in ninth (61.80 meters). The Croatian Sandra Perkovic, Olympic champion in 2012 and 2016, was fourth (65.01) to miss a medal.

More on that shortly.
