First test and first benchmarks of the GeForce RTX 4080: the RTX 3090 Ti in bad shape?

The second card in the “Ada Lovelace” range seems set to already make the GeForce RTX 3000 outdated.

A few hours before the lifting of the embargo imposed by NVIDIA, the first independent test of the GeForce RTX 4080 is spreading like wildfire on the Web. A beginning of conclusion while waiting for the release of our own test, on Clubic.

A sample of five games

A first test that comes to us from Big Hardware Player, a regular at these “pre-launch” revelations. In the past, it had thus been the first to publish independent performance measurements for the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3080 Ti.

The bugger therefore does it again a few hours before the embargo is lifted with what seems to be two BIOSes locked at 320 Watts and 450 Watts, with – of course – an impact on the energy efficiency of the second “Ada Lovelace” card. launched by NVIDIA.

To believe VideocardzBig Hardware Player has split performance averages across multiple games so things are easier to read: the games used are Forza Horizon 5, Cyberpunk 2077, Borderlands 3, Total War: Troy and Shadow of the Tomb Raiderall in 4K.

The RTX 3090 Ti dominated by almost 20%

These early results show an RTX 4080 around 19% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti PGF, Zotac’s high-end model used for comparison. On the other hand, the RTX 4080 would logically be 23% slower than the RTX 4090.

It is however important to specify that the RTX 3090 Ti PGF and RTX 4090 were installed on a PC with DDR5-6800 while the RTX 4080 had to be satisfied with a machine with DDR5-6200. Either way, the processor was a Core i9-13900K.

In addition to this sample of games, Big Hardware Player has combined various results under 3DMark : the latter lead to slightly different differences since the RTX 4080 is, this time, 25% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti PGF and 21% slower than the RTX 4090.

Finally, this first test is an opportunity to vary the electrical power delivered to the RTX 4080 in order to verify its behavior. Whether on 3DMark Where Cyberpunk 2077we note that the threshold of 280 Watts seems to be a kind of “ sweet spot »: a point beyond which the results no longer progress as quickly as the electrical power.
