Five series on love to recommend to teenagers

Attention, we did not say “five series on sex” (the subject will be the subject of another selection, I promise, sworn) but five series on love, the real, the great, the not necessarily unique but unforgettable. A selection that should make your teenagers want to love and be loved.

“My first times”: the tender age of Mindy Kaling

Let’s start with the funniest and most endearing, the one that makes us believe in the vitality of this not obvious genre that is the “teenage” series, especially when it is aimed more at a female audience. my first times (Never Have I Ever in original version) is inspired by the teenage memories of its co-creator and screenwriter Mindy Kaling, who, through her fictional alter ego, Devi, recounts the efforts of a brilliant but not very popular high school student of Indian origin to become “cool to find a boyfriend and emancipate herself from an intrusive Mother Courage. Thanks to Kaling’s tender humor and outspokenness suitable for the youngest, the series sensitively deals with the question of self-acceptance. To watch as a family, from around 12-13 years old.

Three seasons available on demand on Netflix.

“Love, Victor”: between boys and girls, Victor’s heart swings

“Love, Victor”, on Disney+.

For an inclusive, modest and full of delicacy approach (we are at Disney), love and sexuality (in the sense of sexual orientation rather than practice), this spin-off of the film Love, Simon will open doors in the minds of middle school students and, at best, facilitate conversation with their parents. Victor, a young boy of Hispanic origin surrounded by a loving family but who is starting from scratch after a move, feels torn between girls and boys. Through his epistolary relationship with Simon (the Simon of the film), an older boy who takes on the role of confidant, Victor testifies to his difficulty in fitting in, feeling normal and above all seeing his feelings clearly. The approach is quite sweet, but the series proves useful for talking about these subjects with the youngest (from 10 years old).

“How I Met Your Mother”, “How I Met Your Father”: friends first?

“How I Met Your Father”, on Disney+.

We admit it without an ounce of guilt: advising a series to your children is like giving yourself a good excuse to rewatch the whole thing. So let’s take advantage of the fact that the cult series of our 20-30 year olds, How I Met Your Motherhas benefited since 2022 from an inverted suite, How I Met Your Father, and both are currently available in their entirety on Disney+. The original has aged much better than Friends, and teenagers (from around 15 years old) will probably laugh as much as we do at the loving and friendly tribulations of this band of New Yorkers in search of the meaning of life. And we will have fun with the differences between the original and its sequel, written twenty years later and therefore much more woke, especially when it comes to evoking the relationship between the sexes. Which will not prevent young people or their parents from laughing at both.
