After Prince Philip’s death, five-year-old Erin wrote a letter to Queen Elizabeth II. To her surprise, she received an answer from the palace.

Prince Philip’s death in April left the whole of Britain in mourning. Five-year-old Erin Bywater was also moved by it. It was important to the girl to write a personal letter to Queen Elizabeth II to comfort her during this difficult time.

With the help of her mother, Erin sent a letter to the palace: she expressed condolences to the queen on the death of her husband and asked her if she had any pets. Erin herself has a cat named Simba and three snakes, as she told the Queen. She had also painted a picture of the monarch: “I know you are sad right now, so I thought you might like this picture.” About four weeks later, the five-year-old received an answer from Buckingham Palace. The Queen (or her employees) thanked them with a card for the condolences.

Until recently, Erin had no idea who the Queen was. Only one day before Prince Philip’s death did she begin to be interested in the queen, her mother reported to the Daily Mail. After his death, Erin wanted to write the Queen a nice letter to cheer her up. When the unexpected answer came from Buckingham Palace, the girl jumped up and down for joy, says her mother: “I couldn’t believe that you answered – and so quickly too.”

The five-year-old from the town of Scunthorpe in the English county of Lincolnshire now proudly shows the card to everyone she meets – especially her classmates. The palace would also like to reply to all other citizens who have turned to the Queen with condolences after the death of Prince Philip.
