five years later, Rian Johnson is even prouder

When it was released in 2017, Star Wars The Last Jedi caused a lot of talk and many fans were disappointed with the final rendering. Yet its director seems very proud.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, director Rian Johnson returned to his Star Wars film The Last Jedi 5 years later. The time to meditate on the question and to think back to this great cinematographic adventure. Especially since there were many criticisms of both the film and the director himself, often from disappointed fans.

Pride for Star Wars The Last Jedi

Johnson’s words are clear about his Star Wars:

After five years, I’m even more proud of it. When it was my turn, I really gave it my all. I think it’s impossible for any of us to approach Star Wars without thinking of it as a myth that we grew up with. And like a myth, this story grew inside us and affected us. The ultimate goal was not to remove everything, the goal was to return to the basics, to the fundamental power of the myth. And at the end of the day, I hope the movie is an affirmation of the power of the SW mythos in our lives..

He also returned to the emblematic character of Luke Skywalker, explaining that it was not for him to deconstruct the myth of the Jedi master, as we have often read in the words of fans:

For me, the final images of the film do not deconstruct the myth of Luke Skywalker, they construct it.

Still in 2022, this Star Wars film has many supporters and detractors and it is very difficult to have a calm discussion about it with fans of the license. After all, it seems legitimate to be proud of one’s work, whether it is controversial or not. Note also that the actor Mark Hamill had officially supported the director via several statements while explaining that his opinion on the representation of Skywalker in the film had evolved over time.
