Two detainees and three prison officers were injured, including one seriously, this Friday, January 28 in the fire of a cell in the Fleury-Mérogis remand center (Essonne).
One of the agents, aged 28, was seriously injured in the knees and the back of the legs, by return of vapor, indicated to AFP the interregional direction of the penitentiary services and the parquet floor of Évry.
Two other officers were intoxicated by the fumes.
The vital prognosis of the two detainees, both aged 30, is not engaged. They were taken to the hospital.
An intentional fire?
The fire in this cell located in the men’s quarters, on the 3rd floor of the largest remand center in Europe, broke out in the afternoon, according to the firefighters.
By mid-afternoon, the fire was still ongoing but under control. The origin is currently unknown, said the prosecutor of Évry, Caroline Nisand.
“Following this fire, three agents had to equip themselves” with fire gear and “intervene to evacuate the two detainees inside the cell”, explained in a press release the local office of the Ufap union. -Unsa Justice, while claiming that it was the two detainees who “voluntarily” set fire to the cell.
The union asks the management to file a complaint “for having endangered the lives of these agents”.
