Flooded rail tunnels – Eurostar trains between London and Europe are running again – News

  • According to the Eurostar operator, trains from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam to London and in the opposite direction will run regularly again on Sunday.
  • The reason for Saturday’s outages was flooded railway tunnels near the British capital.
  • Over 30,000 travelers were affected. Delays are also to be expected on Sunday.

There were no trains running on the high-speed route on which Eurostar trains travel through the Eurotunnel under the English Channel throughout Saturday. The message called on rail travelers to look for alternative connections.

By lunchtime the company had apologized for the difficulties. “Eurostar is extremely sorry for the unforeseen issues affecting our customers and services.” It is understood that it is an important time to return home before the New Year, the statement continued.

According to train operator Southeastern Railway, the flooded section of the route was two tunnels that run under the River Thames at Ebbsfleet station in Kent. Both were closed due to flooding before the flooding could be brought under control again in time for New Year’s Eve. For the second time in ten days, the Eurostar trains were affected by serious disruptions – shortly before Christmas, the Eurotunnel employees went on strike.

As the company operating the high-speed train reports, the trains will run regularly again on Sunday. Nevertheless, there could still be delays in the morning due to speed limits, especially since the train stations are likely to be very busy on New Year’s Eve.
