Florida bans “vaccine passport” in the name of individual freedoms

The “vaccine passport”, a document certifying that its holder has been vaccinated against Covid-19, has been banned in Florida in the name of compliance with ” individual liberties “, the Republican governor of this very touristy state announced on Friday April 2. The decree of Governor Ron DeSantis prohibits the administrative services of this state in the south-east of the country from issuing “Vaccine passports”, or any type of “Document to certify” that a person has received a vaccine against Covid-19.

The text also prevents companies of the “Sunshine State” from requiring their customers this type of “Vaccination passport” or proof of immunization to the virus. For Mr. DeSantis, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, ” the vaccine passports limit individual freedoms ” and threaten medical confidentiality.

“It is totally unacceptable that a government or the private sector requires you to show proof of vaccination just to participate in society”Ron DeSantis said Monday at a press conference. ” You want to go to the cinema ? Do you have to show this? No. Want to go see a game? No. Do you want to go to an amusement park? No. We don’t agree with that ”, he continued.

The announcement comes after the publication of a Washington Post article according to which Joe Bien’s administration is working to put government standards in place for a future “vaccine passport” to accompany the lifting of health restrictions in the country. .

The creation of a health passport is also under discussion in the European Union, which would like to launch this type of initiative this summer for travel within it. China for its part announced in early March a digital “health certificate” for Chinese who would like to travel abroad.

More than six million people have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine in Florida, where the total population is around 22 million. From Monday, all adult individuals wishing to be vaccinated will be eligible, without a medical prescription.
