Because of the war in Ukraine, flour is in short supply in many supermarkets. Here you can find out which flour substitutes are available so that you don’t have to do without baking.

There are various reasons to avoid flour – be it because of one gluten intolerance or because you diet low in carbohydrates would like to. In times of the Ukraine war, there is also the fact that the flour shelves are empty in many places – that’s why we are showing you some flour alternatives. However, you should note that the substitute flours often do not bind as well because they lack the gluten protein. So the flour cannot always be replaced 1:1 and you should, for example, add egg yolk or psyllium to the dough as a substitute for glue in order to get a good baking result.

Ground almonds

Ground almonds or hazelnuts are very good alternatives to flour. Since they don’t draw as much liquid, you shouldn’t replace them 1:1, but rather with them 125 grams of almonds per 100 grams of flour calculate. Try these almond moons or our almond bread.

Almond flour is also suitable as a flour substitute. Unlike ground almonds, it is highly de-oiled and can therefore absorb liquid when baking. You can exchange it for flour at a ratio of 1:1 or mix it with other flour alternatives to make the dough a little fluffier. Coconut flour has a distinct taste of its own, but is otherwise a very good substitute for flour. you should always mix with another floursuch as in this recipe for a cinnamon apple cake: In it, two parts coconut flour are mixed with one part cassava flour.
