Foam and dead fish – Mauerbach contaminated with cleaning agents

In the market town of Mauerbach in Lower Austria, a suspicious formation of foam was discovered in its own stream on Thursday morning. Now it is assumed that the water was contaminated with cleaning agents.

On Thursday evening, residents of the Mauerbach in Vienna-Penzing discovered foam and dead fish in the water and informed the authorities. The Viennese professional fire brigade went out to identify the contamination. It was only at the interface of the Mauerbach with the Wien river that it could be determined that cleaning agents were involved. Contamination discharged The contamination extended over a total length of 20 kilometers to the Wien river. A water barrier could then be set up at the Stuben Bridge. The contamination was diverted at this very blockage in the center of Vienna. Investigations are ongoing The State Criminal Police Office of Lower Austria (environmental crime) has started the investigation. The surveys should show whether a suspicion of where the contamination could come from is confirmed. Experts have already been appointed by the public prosecutor’s office in St. Pölten.
